Why to be concerned about about “pixie dust” in the brain

What do.. depression, anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, irritable bowel, hormone dysfunction, eating disorders, Fibromyalgia, obsessions, compulsions, adrenal dysfunction, chronic pain and migraine headaches…have in common?
While there is still some debate, they have been shown to have links to neurotransmitter imbalance.
What is a neurotransmitter?
Some call it “pixie dust” for the brain. They are basically chemicals in the brain. Here is someone above my expertise explaining….
“Neurotransmitters are powerful chemicals that regulate numerous physical and emotional processes such as cognitive and mental performance, emotional states and pain response. Virtually all functions in life are controlled by neurotransmitters.”
Ok…enough science. So what does this have to do with you and me?
If you struggle in the energy, mental focus, and alertness category then there is something you need to try out!
Enter Spark! Spark is a drink that has 20 vitamins, minerals and nutrients that work synergistically to provide ingredients to help the brain produce the “pixie dust” (aka neurotransmitters) our body needs.*

The biggest killer of (your health) success

I really admire and learn a ton from Donald Miller. Not only has he been a successful author, but he has an incredible company helping businesses communicate what they have to offer to the marketplace.
He said something recently that I wish the whole world would hear ringing in their head every morning.
He said the biggest killer of our success is….playing the victim.
Of course he was trying to help business leaders, but there is no doubt that this applies to all of our life…especially our health!
So it is time to get contemplative for a second….ok maybe a little longer than that.
Ask yourself: “Have I been playing a victim role in regards to my health?”
Have you found yourself thinking that…I just have too much weight to lose…I don’t have very good metabolism…I don’t have time to workout…I don’t have the money to eat healthy…I need to take care of my family first…this one health issue is holding me back…It’s too cold outside…It’s too hot outside…I don’t like gyms…etc..
We could go on couldn’t we?
But what if…
What if TODAY…we could change our mentality.
What if we could take the things that are pushing back against us accomplishing our goals and see them as opportunities?
- Failure…as an opportunity to learn.
- Hardship…as an opportunity for more strength.
- Discomfort…as a chance for greater perseverance.
So let’s not play the victim.
Instead, let’s see the whole world…even our bodies… conspiring together to bring us greater success today!

The thing people don’t really consider when trying to reach a goal

In some class in college I heard this new interesting term.
The term?…. Value Attribution.
It kind of made sense back then. Now though, after coaching many people through the years in their health and fitness goals, it takes on a whole new meaning.
In fact, I believe if people would take a real honest look at themselves and this principle, they would break through to new levels in their health…and other life goals too for that matter!
So here’s more on this concept and the question of what makes some rocks, just stay rocks and some get to be diamonds…

The One Thing Most People Lack

So what is the one thing most people lack?
Money??
No. Although that might be true for many of us…it’s not that.
The answer is: Sleep.
Did you know…the record for the longest period of time without sleep stands at 264.4 hours and was set by a high school student in 1964.
That’s 11 days without sleep! Holy cow! He must have been all jacked up on Mountain Dew…yes they had that back then.
While many a teenager loves to push the threshold of desired insomnia, most of us long for…and desperate need…more sleep.
If you struggle with falling asleep or getting adequate sleep, here are some suggestions:
- Try a sleep monitoring app like the Sleep Cycle app (or something similar) so you will force yourself to be more intentional about getting adequate sleep each night.
- Prepare a relaxing environment. Shut off the electronics at least 30 min before bedtime. Avoid eating heavy meals and limit fluid intake close to bedtime. Keep your room comfortably cool.
- Create a routine that is easy to follow and maintain. Go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday, even on the weekends. And part of your routine should be to maintain an active lifestyle during the day.
But if you are like some of my friends whose minds are on hyper-drive and find falling asleep and staying asleep a real challenge, you will want to get your hands on the “secret sleep sauce” they swear by that helps them get a good nights rest.
It is so good, one friend orders multiple cases of it at a time! You can find it here:

Who’s Healthier: Crossfit Guy or Fitness Class Girl?

So who would win in a head to toe health comparison between a Crossfit’er or fitness class pro?
The answer is simple really.
Let’s say all things like nutrition and genetic makeup of the athletes are the same. Of course we know this is not even possible…but for “scientific” purposes and to drive home my main point, please go with me here!
The answer really comes down to something very simple.
The winner is the one who MOVES the most.
Yes…movement of the body.
Think about it. All other things being equal, the person who moves their body around more will be more healthy.
As my chiropractor says, “motion is lotion”. And not only lotion for aches and pains, but lotion for overall health.
When we lift weights, go for a walk or run, do stretches or calisthenics, swimming, play with our kids…do anything to MOVE our body MORE, we will win in our health.
So don’t be too concerned about the latest “best” exercise regimen.
Let your goal be to beat the old you that lived yesterday.
How?
Just be the champion you are by moving more today!

What do dryers, cars and your body have in common?

Have you ever…
- put your clothes in the dryer and then they don’t dry?
- been to your car mechanic who told you that you need to replace your air filter?
- struggled with energy or tried to lose weight but seem to be “bonking” everyday?
Well congratulations! You are not alone.
All three of these situations are similar because the solution is about cleaning out “the filters”.
If we want dry clothes we have to clean the lint trap. If we want a fuel efficient car we need to replace the air filter. If we want to “tune up” our body for optimal energy, weight management and absorption of nutrients from foods, we need to cleanse our body regularly.
So may I humbly suggest three action steps for you?
- Clean your dryer lint trap every use.
- Replace your car air filter regularly.
- And by all means, treat your body to a gentle and effective cleanse regularly (4 times a year) too!

The reason bad doctors don’t want you to eat apples

The facts are in. We need more fiber in our diet.
However, less than 10 percent of adults in the U.S. consume enough dietary fiber each day.
So, you like me, have probably figured out you need to up your own fiber game in what you eat. But then we start hearing all this talk of insoluble and soluble fiber and it feels as though we have opened pandora’s box (not the music app :-)). It can get confusing.
What’s better…what’s the difference??
Well to keep it simple…enter the apple!
Apples are a good way to get extra fiber in your diet because they have BOTH insoluble and soluble fiber. Soluble fiber turns to a “gel-like” substance in your body and insoluble tends to increase stool bulk and aid movement through the digestive system.
How do these two magical fibers help us? They…
- Support digestive health
- Aid in weight management
- Lower your risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Just so you know, one normal size apple contains about 3.6 grams of fiber. It is recommended that men consume 38 grams per day and 25 grams of fiber for women.
That’s a lot of fiber and a ton of apples.
But don’t fret too much. There are other healthy fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts where we can rack up our fiber gains.
But, if you want an additional secret back door way into the halls of fiber freedom, may I suggest the fiber I use during my seasonal herbal cleanse.
So may you be healthier and more “regular” in your life!

One of the best advice that I didn’t want to do

19 years ago a friend told me to do something I didn’t want to do.
What was it?
He said, “You need to do a cleanse.”
Immediately my mind went into horror stories that I had heard from others. Strict diets, juice only diets, fasting, colon blows and the like is all I could imagine. I told him I work outside all day, “I don’t want to have to wear a diaper!”
When I finally relented and gave it a try, little did I know how easy and great I would feel during and after.
Now don’t get me wrong, there are some crazy cleanses out there. But if you are looking for a “gentle and effective” cleanse to tune up your body, then look no further than Advocare’s Herbal Cleanse system.
Trust me… your body will thank you for it.

Courage & Discomfort Zones
Where have you been playing it safe?
Have you been hoping for big impact without any discomfort attached to it?
I love this quote by Micahel Hyatt talking about what is required if we desire big impact from our life.
“Now if you don’t have that much ambition, if you don’t really have big goals, if you don’t really want to make that big of an impact in the world, there’s no courage required, there’s no need to be in the discomfort zone. Just get on with your comfortable life and make it as easy as you can, but if you’re out to create a big outcome, that’s going to require discomfort. You’ve got to get comfortable with discomfort.”
How will you move into discomfort today in your health goals, business goals and relationship goals?
